Metzy & The Cowboy Action Shooters - Love Me Dead

This was a bitch to record. There I said it. Ludo cover, not quite my usual thing but then again that was the whole idea- learning and recording songs that are a bit outside the usual genres/topics and attempt to make them all acoustic like.

Took numerous attempts over about three days to get it to a space where I was happy with it. And once I was happy with it, it was hella fun to do.

I don’t know why I just used the word ‘hella’ in a sentence. or again. whatever.

I am unsure as to wtf happened with the recording on this one. stubborn hissy thing wouldn’t fuck off without me having to can the track and start over which kinda messes with the spirit of this project a la “recording shit on the fly“. and then ended up disappearing halfway through the track. bastards.

But besides that, this is one of my all time favourite songs, that funnily enough I didn’t get around to learning until the other night. John Farnham was the first concert i ever went to as a kid, his belting the shit out of his tunes ended up serving an inspiration of the way I sang, and got into music. in the australian cast of Jesus Christ Superstar back in the early 90′s, he played the head role (something about the mullet) and his rendition of Gethsemane spurred me into orchestral arrangements as well as embarking on the path of picking up instruments.

(Quite nerdy, but my old high school here in Brisbane fulfilled two of my biggest musical-based dreams: One being to be a part of a production of Jesus Christ Superstar, and the other to play the star wars theme in an orchestra.)

I’ve never attempted one of Johnny’s songs before, other than spending hours singing along to his tracks as a kid. so it was kind of weird to do this piece. But my song playlists have a tendancy to play songs that seem to convey some kind of synchronous message, so I run with it.

I’m trying to set myself tasks of new recordings every two weeks, and at least one separate additional recording of an original song every month. This is in an attempt to not only motivate me to learn new songs but also to attempt to start writing again. If I don’t keep writing, I find I get bored of the songs I already have and then don’t want to play them. VARIETY IS KEY.

PS, pre-warning, I am planning on writing more about the recordings, as well as the shit involved.

This is my little narcissistic adventure, and you’re all along for the ride.

I promise there’ll be cookies at the end of it.

And no, not that shitty Dan Brown book.

Cover to cover the expanse between songs while i’m sorting out new material. hoo-freaking-ray! This one is by the excellent Ben Parker and you should check him out because he’s just awesome.

uh, the brief intro was because my cat was talking to me and it amused me on playback so i kept it in there.

Feelings that inspired this rather sudden song construction are no longer legitimate, but whatever works as a creativity point i suppose.

I “wrote” and recorded this before running out the door for work the other morning. I decided to just follow the flow of a few currents, and record to see what would come about. turned out surprisingly better than expected.

A fucking haunting song by Ben Harper. I normally can’t stand the dude’s stuff but fuck this song got to me. i’m swearing a lot. and i went to sleep and woke up so my voice would be all low and fucked which would work for the song.

i’m still swearing. shoosh dammit.

Another original from moi that i finally got around to recording. Kind of a rough cut because my microphone is shithouse, but i will likely be back to redo this one when i have a better setup shortly.
